People rue power outages as cold wave grips Chamba

But our team has restored the electricity in morning hours" said Roshan Lal, an assistant engineer of the area.The power outages have also affected water supply in the region.The residents have expressed their dissent over the lack of arrangements by the power department during the onset of winter season."Either there is a breakdown due to failure of transformers due to snowfall or low hanging trees on the wires which cause destruction during winters. Department should have chopped off these trees and repaired the transformers on time" said Parveen Kumar, a resident of Silla Gharat village near Chamba.New-borns and elderly people are the bearing the brunt of freaquent power cuts in villages.Officials of the electricity department stated that it is the heavy usage of electric heating appliances which affects the power supply. They further told that it results in heating of electricity wires and finally power failures."Department is also facing a huge shortage of field staff. Most of the linemen are now in the age of retirement and new recruitment is nowhere in sight. It hampers the routine work also to assist the people" said an official requesting anonymity.Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Bakloh area told that this happens every year there are many areas which remains disconnected from electricity and water supply during winters."It is not with the remote areas only. If you ask people of the main Chamba town, they too are facing the same problem" he said.
