SRINAGAR: A 24-year-old special police officer ( SPO ) posted at PDP MLA Aijaz Mir’s official residence in Srinagar allegedly decamped with eight service weapons of on-duty policemen at the premises on Friday evening. The accused was a cook at the MLA’s residence, police saidA massive search operation is underway to trace the accused SPO while police probe the crime’s motive. While investigators suspect the theft to be part of a bigger terror conspiracy, the role of on-duty cops at Mir’s residence — whose weapons were stolen — is also under the scanner. “SPO Adil Bashir Sheikh, who was a cook at Aijaz Mir’s official residence in Jawahar Nagar, decamped with eight service weapons — including seven AK-47 rifles and one pistol from the guard room — from the premises,” a police spokesman said. “A resident of Zainpora in Shopian district, Sheikh was engaged as an SPO on March 11, 2017,” the spokesman added. A high alert has been sounded across Srinagar district.
