SMC mulls gifting banyan plant saplings to women during Vad Savitri festival

Surat: The garden department of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will be distributing banyan plant saplings to women on occasion of Vad Savitri festival on June 27. In simple words, banyan tree releases oxygen for more than 12 hours which is much higher than other plants.”SMC took up banyan plantation in the past on Amroli-Kosad road and currently there are large number of banyan trees growing alongside the road. So, it releases oxygen during majority hours of the night too. This is being done to promote plantation of banyan plants in the city.The idea was floated by the civic body as a religious belief is attached to the tree. It is believed that the tree’s branches release oxygen even during night time, which is unique to this variety of tree.SMC aims to plant 10,000 banyan plant saplings during functions scheduled at 22 places in the city where women go to worship the banyan tree and pray for long life of their husbands.SMC garden superintendent, S Gautam told TOI, “We shall be distributing banyan plant saplings to the women and ask them to take an oath that they would nurture it in their backyard or garden.”“Since the banyan plant releases oxygen even during night, more number of banyan trees will help clean the air in the city,” he added.Banyan, neem, peepul and areca palm trees release oxygen in night after absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2).Explaining the phenomenon of plants releasing oxygen during night, associate professor at Navsari Agricultural University (NAU) Dr T R Ahlawat, said, “The banyan tree follows crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) photosynthesis.
