Surat airport designated as immigration check-post

Commissioner of police, Surat has been appointed civil authority for the purpose of immigration check-post at the airport with effect from June 1, 2018.The airport authorities expect the immigration services to begin in the next couple of months. Surat: In an important development that will expedite the process of launching of international air services from the Diamond City, Central Government has designated Surat airport as an authorized immigration check-post.In a gazette notification published on June 12 by Ministry of Home Affairs, Surat airport has been designated as an authorized immigration check-post for entry and exit from India with valid travel documents for all classes of passengers. We hope Surat-Sharjah flight to be launched in third week of August from Surat.”Significantly, cabins for customs officials, installation of computers, baggage checking counters, bank and screening facilities etc. are yet not ready at the airport. Training has been given to 35 personnel from Surat police to facilitate customs check at airport.Deputy chief minister and finance minister Nitin Patel in the budget presented in Gujarat Assembly in February announced Rs1 crore for setting up of immigration facilities at Surat airport.The home department of Gujarat Government had on September 20, 2017 asked the director general of police to allot 68 immigration staff for Surat airport in the financial year of 2018-19.The Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Ministry of Civil Aviation and Ministry of Home Affairs had given clear directions to the state government for taking over immigration functions at Surat airport.According to airport officials, Air India Express had booked the slot for Sharjah-Surat-Sharjah flight service at Surat airport in March this year, but had to cancel the same due to delay in giving customs notified status and immigration check-post authorization to it.‘Member of we work for a working airport at Surat’ volunteer Sanjay Jain said, “With the gazette notification on immigration check-post at Surat airport, it is clear that international services would be launched very soon from here.
