Gujarat: Dangs receives heavy rainfall, 17 roads closed

SURAT: The tribal hinterland of Dangs was lashed with heavy rains, throwing the normal life out of gear. About 17 roads maintained by the Dangs district panchayat and the Roads and Building (R&B) department have been closed for vehicular movement and the pedestrian on Thursday.Sources said that the Dangs received about 80mm of rainfall between 6am and 4pm, flooding the low-lying causeway bridge connecting the villages. Due to heavy income of water in river Khapri, most of the low-lying causeways have been flooded and that more than two dozen villages have been cut off.Meanwhile, state highways and roads in south Gujarat have been closed due to heavy rains including 77 roads in Navsari, 52 in Tapi district, 26 in Surat, 21 in Valsad, 17 in Dangs have been closed after they were flooded with rain water.Sources said that the electricity poles in some of the villages have collapsed due to heavy rains, resulting in the electricity failure. The teams of the electricity department were on their toes to restore power supply in many villages.District collector BK Kumar and district development officer JD Patel visited the affected villages including the low-lying causeway at the Vangan-Kutarnachya village and take stock of the situation.The Gira waterfalls in Dangs has come alive with the gushing flood waters into the Ambica river, which criss-crosses in the Navsari district before merging into the Arabian sea.Sources said that almost all the check dams in Dangs have been overflowing with the fresh supply of water and that the rest of the water is going into the rivers connecting Valsad and Navsari districts.
