Rapaport to provide platform to Surti diamantaires to directly sell diamonds to US buyers

Surat: If all goes well , the small and medium diamantaires in the world’s largest diamond cutting and polishing centre will be able to directly sell their polished diamonds to American jewellers.Thanks to US-based Rapaport group chairman Martin Rapaport, who is camping in the Diamond City from the last three days to network with the small and medium diamond manufacturers, to create a digital marketing platform for direct selling of polished diamonds to small and medium jewellers in America.“About 40 per cent of small jewellers in the US are buying from wholesalers of polished diamonds from US itself. They do not have direct links with Surat, which cuts and polish 90 per cent of world diamonds. We want to set-up a digital marketing platform where young diamantaires will connect with the American jewellers,” Rapaport told TOI.“I am planning to bring the American jewellers to Surat in January-2019 to build relations. Now that the air connectivity from Surat has improved, US jewellers will be more than willing to come to Surat for direct purchase of polished diamonds,” Rapaport added.Rapaport also advocated for setting up of a common facility centre (CFC) to provide state-of-the-art facilities to the small and medium diamond cutters to increase their yield and keep them updated with the latest technology available in the industry.“I visited small diamond factories in Surat and found that working conditions are not so good. The workers are sitting in a room without ventilation. I want to set-up a state-of-the-art factory where workers will have all the facilities,” said Rapaport adding, “We will be providing source certification in association with Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to establish that the diamonds are not from conflict zones. The testing of diamonds free of synthetics will also be done at our facility.”A small diamantaire from Katargam Suresh Lalan, whose factory was visited by Rapaport, told TOI, “Rapaport is there in the industry from the last four decades and it is going to benefit small and medium diamantaires as he has his focus on Surat. He wants to bring American jewellers in Surat for direct business with us. Till now, we have been selling to the wholesalers in Mumbai. The direct business between us and America jewellers will create a win-win situation.”
