Lightning kills one in Limbayat

Surat: Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed Surat city on Sunday afternoon.The city recorded 86mm of rainfall until 6pm, 55mm in just one hour from 2pm to 3pm even as Manohar Nimba Patil (26) was struck dead by lightning in Limbayat on Sunday. This monsoon season, the city has so far recorded 699mm of rainfall. Some areas of Varachha, City Light and old city were waterlogged. This had led to flooding of Umrawada area of the city.

Patil was in the bathroom on the first floor of his house when lightning struck the building, killing him on the spot. Preliminary medical examination said the man died because the electricity had entered his body through his legs.Three trees got uprooted in Jahangirpura, Umiyadham and City Light. Some areas of Varachha, City Light and old city were waterlogged. People found it difficult to ride their two-wheelers and drive cars on the flooded roads.Meanwhile, Kamrej in Surat district received 90mm of rain until 6pm, bringing in fresh inflow of water into Meethi Khadi which passes through parts of Limbayat municipal zone and Parvat Patiya of the city.For the third consecutive day on Sunday, the water level in Meethi Khadi flowed above the 7.25 metre danger mark and was touching 7.95 metre. This had led to flooding of Umrawada area of the city. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials thus shifted 150 people from Nehru Nagar in Umrawada after water from Meethi Khadi entered the area.“The water level has gone up to 7.95 metre in Meethi Khadi and hence we shifted 150 people to a relief centre,” said Bhairav Desai, executive engineer, SMC.Surat city had last year received 1,291mm of rainfall. This monsoon season, the city has so far recorded 699mm of rainfall.
