Meethi creek still flooding houses

Surat: Surat city recorded 115mm of rain in the past 24 hours until 6pm on Monday. Vambay Awas, Saraswati Vidyalaya and nearby areas have been waterlogged for the past few days.“We still need to construct 600 metre of embankment and then the problem will be solved. Most of the rain occurred on Sunday night with the city receiving only 18mm on the following day.The water level at Meethi Khardi passing through the city remained at 7.65 metre slightly above the danger mark of 7.25 metre for the fourth consecutive day on Monday.Consequently, some areas of Limbayat municipal zone were flooded and people had to wade through two feet of water. The construction of embankment on this stretch would be completed after the monsoon,” municipal commissioner M Thennarasan said.About 17.20km long embankment is being built along Meethi Khadi and Kakara Khadi under the Mindhola River Rehabilitation Scheme in the city.“Tender of Rs30 crore for the embankment construction for the remaining stretch has been approved,” a civic officer of Limbayat zone said.The city witnessed six incidents of tree uprootings from near Majura fire station, Khatodara Unique Hospital, Palanpur Jakatnaka, Katargam Old GIDC, Galemandi and Parvat Patiya on Monday.
