Surat: Around 1 ,037 people of 274 families were shifted to safer locations in Navsari district as rainwater and overflowing rivers flooded their homes in Chikhli, Gandevi and Vansda on Tuesday.Vansda was pounded by 222mm rainfall since early morning till 4pm on Tuesday. District collector Dr MD Modiya told TOI that the people were shifted from seven worst-affected villages of these talukas.“Heavy rain lashed Vansda and Chikhli talukas. Places in the upstream of Kaveri and Ambika rivers also received 159mm of rain resulting in swelling of many rivers,” Modiya said.At 9pm, Ambika river was flowing at 29.95 foot, 1.95 foot above its danger mark, while Kaveri river was flowing at 18 foot, one foot above the danger mark. National Disaster Response Force team has undertaken a rescue operation to save 10 people trapped in Dasera near Billimora town .Heavy rain has been battering many places in South Gujarat in the past few days, which had compelled the authorities to shift 1,000 people from Navsari and Surat on Monday too, with only a few returning to their homes a day later.Tapi collector NK Damor told TOI, “We have about 15 causeways in Dolvan taluka and most of them are overflowing. We have been warning people not to cross the causeways now and had also posted policemen there.”The situation has turned sensitive in Dolvan because the rivers that originate in the Dang hills are flowing turbulently due to massive influx of water.
