By allowing their under-age children to drive vehicles despite the law not permitting, they are not only subjecting them to the danger of mishaps but also indirectly teaching them how rules shouuld be flouted. The crackdown is part of the the police’s drive to streamline traffic chaos in the city.“We will be concentrating on different traffic issues daily. While police would continue its drive, it is more important for the parents to become more sensitive and obedient to traffic rules. One one day, we will crackdown on rickshaws parking haphazardly and sometimes on heavy vehicles entering the city during unauthorized hours. A sustained drive against parents giving their wards a free hand to break the traffic rules will not only help lessen chances of accidents but also ease vehicular chaos in many areas.

Surat: The police on Friday launched a massive crackdown on under-aged drivers by seizing as many as 71 vehicles and registering 15 offences against parents of all children below 16 years found driving two-wheelers.The drive was carried out across the city but sources said that most vehicles seized were in Athwa Lines, Adajan and Walled City areas. An official from traffic department said that there is provision in the Motor Vehicles Act that the person on whose name the vehicle is registered can’t give his vehicle to a minor for driving.Police cracked the whip after a notification issued to schools and parents directing them to give proper guidance to minor students against driving two-wheelers.“However, it looks that the notification was taken seriously and conveyed to the children and hence we had to take this action,” a senior police officer said, adding that action will be taken under the law against parents whose minor children are caught riding two-wheelers in the city.Police will will continue to look for minors driving two wheelers in the city and take action against the errant parents.Police commissioner Satish Sharma told TOI: “ Young lives are precious and we need to save them. Moreover, underage boys and girls can cause accidents, which sometimes could seriously injure themselves or others.”Sharma said that some school authorities agreed to not allow under-age students who come with vehicles in the schools. The crackdown is part of the the police’s drive to streamline traffic chaos in the city.“We will be concentrating on different traffic issues daily. One one day, we will crackdown on rickshaws parking haphazardly and sometimes on heavy vehicles entering the city during unauthorized hours. On the weekend nights, we have started using breath analysers to nab drunk drivers.”Hundreds of children are seen throughout the city zooming on their two-wheelers and its a common sight to see three or even four children driving on a single vehicle. This is perhaps the first time that the city police has focussed on reigning in parents who give two hoots to the traffic laws.Times ViewThe crackdown on under-age driving is a welcome step by the city police. A sustained drive against parents giving their wards a free hand to break the traffic rules will not only help lessen chances of accidents but also ease vehicular chaos in many areas. By allowing their under-age children to drive vehicles despite the law not permitting, they are not only subjecting them to the danger of mishaps but also indirectly teaching them how rules shouuld be flouted. A crackdown similar to the police should also be started by the school managements and take stringent action that would instill fear of law among children.
