Woman duped of cash, jewellery worth Rs 1 lakh by her fiancee, friends

SURAT: A 25-year-old man and his four friends were booked at Sachin police station on Saturday for cheating a 23-year-old woman of cash and jewellery worth Rs1 lakh with a marriage proposal.The 25-year-old man had an affair with the woman and families of both had agreed to their marriage. Hence, when he asked her to come with some cash and jewellery for their marriage, she believed him. However, the man escaped with cash and jewellery of his fiancee Police booked Vijay Chitodiya, currently living in Dahod, and Chensingh, Hakam and the former’s two unidentified friends for criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty. The accused are on the run.“Apart from the main accused, his friends are yet to be identified. All the accused will be nabbed soon,” said a police officer of Sachin police station.The victim woman, who is resident of Sachin area, and the accused Chitodiya belong to same community. They became friends after meeting at a social event and their affair continued for six months when their family members came to know about it. The two were formally engaged at a family function later, police said.Meanwhile, Chitodiya’s father died and his family shifted to Dahod. Chitodiya’s mother refused to get her son married to the complainant. Chitodiya told the victim that he wants to marry her and called her for civil marriage. The victim went to meet the accused with Rs25,000 cash and jewellery worth Rs75,000 on September 12 near Surat railway station. The woman met the accused who was accompanied by his four friends and they reached Golden Bridge on Vadodara bypass in a bus.Chitodiya asked the woman to remove the jewellery she was wearing. He asked her to keep it in bag as they need to get their photos clicked for marriage registration. She kept the jewellery along with the cash in her bag. Two of the accused left with the bag while others started harassing her. Chitodiya told the victim at a tea stall that he was going to answer nature’s call but did not return. Meanwhile, the woman’s family contacted her on her mobile phone.“The woman had left home without informing them. She told her family members that she had no money to return home. The family members took her home,” police said.
