Fisherman to face action for aiding idol immersion

Surat: A fisherman, who helped a devotee immerse Lord Ganesha idol in Tapi in Katargam, faces police action for violating the notification banning immersion in the river.Police identified the fisherman Ghelu Machhi from a video that went viral on Monday in which he is seen taking a devotee in his dinghy with an idol into the river for immersion. Police claimed that the devotee is yet to be identified but Machhi is guilty of violating the notification issued last week.“We have started the process to register an offence against the fisherman. The government departments are strictly implementing Gujarat High Court order to ensure that no immersion takes place following a PIL.National Green Tribunal and Central Pollution Control Board have also issued directives in this regard. There is plenty of water in the weir-cum-causeway while the stretch upto the sea from the weir is dry.Police commissioner Satish Sharma and municipal commissioner M Thennarasan had announced the prohibitory order earlier.
