KAPS completes modernization of its 2nd unit

Two more units of 700MW PHWRs (KAPP-3&4) are under construction at the site. The task was completed three and half months ahead of schedule.The approach to criticality was undertaken after meeting all stipulated regulatory requirements. Surat: Renovation and modernization of second unit of Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS-2) of 220 Mega Watts were completed successfully and that the plant attained criticality-initiation of controlled self-sustaining nuclear fission chain reaction in the reactor-on Monday.Official sources said renovation and modernization works included en masse coolant channel replacement (EMCCR), en masse feeder replacement (EMFR) and other safety upgrades. KAPS–1&2 commenced commercial operations in 1993 and 1995, respectively. Now various tests, connection to grid and increase to full power as per laid down procedures and regulatory clearances would be carried out.KAPS, located at Kakrapar in Surat district, comprises two units of indigenous 220MW pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs).
