Tazias not to be immersed in Tapi

“We had discussed the issue with police commissioner and municipal commissioner and they have agreed to provide us five dumpers to dispose of the tazias and their remnants in the sea. The dumpers will be provided at five locations and the organizers can leave the tazias or any material in them to be taken for disposal in the sea,” Surat City Tazia Committee president Bababhai Engineer said. The tazia processions are likely to conclude late in the night on Friday, committee members said. Surat: Local authorities, who recently banned immersion of idols of Lord Ganesha in Tapi, will not allow organizers of tazias also to immerse them in the river.Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will provide dumpers to the organizers of tazias to take the dismantled materials after the conclusion of Muharram rituals for immersion in the sea.Surat City Tazia Committee members met city police commissioner and municipal commissioner on Wednesday to discuss the issue. In the past after the processions ended, the tazias were taken to the banks of the river and after sprinkling of some water on them, they were taken back to the place of their installation.“Some tazias were immersed in the river immediately by the organizers and others dismantled and brought back to their place of installation and later immersed,” a committee member said.A complete ban on immersion of materials in the river has been imposed by the local authorities because of environmental concerns and hence we need to adhere to the law, the organizers said.
