Respite from waste stink for Bharuch

It is also important to start the solid waste processing unit without delay.” Compost will be made from 50% of the waste, plastic waste will be made into reusable material from 20% of the waste and around 30% of waste will be used to recover gas as a by-product. “The ultimate aim is to reach a stage where there will be no dumping of waste on land by end of 2019,” said Arora, adding that Bharuch town generates around 110 MT waste per day.Currently, Bharuch does not have an official MSW disposal site. The waste will be scientifically disposed so that the site remains landfill free,” said Bharuch collector Ravi Arora.In the first phase, around 65% of waste will be processed.

Bharuch/Surat: The rapidly developing industrial town of Bharuch will get its first official site for disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW). About 20 acre land has been allotted to the Bharuch Municipality for the site at the Saykha GIDC estate by the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC). Sykha GIDC is located 30km from the Bharuch city.The site will be developed under the public private partnership model with total investment of Rs 23 crore.“A MSW processing plant with capacity of 300 metric tonne (MT) per day will be installed at the site. The waste will be scientifically disposed so that the site remains landfill free,” said Bharuch collector Ravi Arora.In the first phase, around 65% of waste will be processed. The civic body has been dumping the MSW near Mandva village near the bank of river Narmada. This had led to petition in the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which directed the local authorities to close the Mandva site of face action.In past one decade, at least ten sites were identified by the civic body for MSW disposal. However, every it faced stiff opposition from people of respective villages and local political leaders.The sites identified in the past include one at at Kukarwada, Sherpura, Tavra, Hinglot, Umraj, Nandelav, Bholav and Rahadpor.The new site will resolve a major issue of disposal of MSW of Bharuch, Ankleshwar and other nearby villages.Jivraj Patel, president of Bharuch Citizen Council told TOI, “It was a need of an hour to act on domestic waste disposal as Bharuch has a very reputation when it came to cleanliness. It is also important to start the solid waste processing unit without delay.”
