Surat: A resident of Begampura was booked at Athwa police station on Wednesday for cheating a 28-year-old woman. The accused had received money through cheque towards a loan sanctioned for the woman by a government department but he gobbled it up.Police booked Tufel Ahmad Shaikh for allegedly appropriating a cheque of Rs4.14 lakh issued in a ‘firm’s name’. The complaint was lodged by Mehnaz Shaikh, a resident of Lalgate, after she failed to recover the loan money from the accused.The complainant, a clerk in a cooperative society, had approached District Industries Centre’s office on Bahumali Campus of Nanpura for a loan to start her own business in 2017. The accused met her there and offered to help get the loan quickly.Mehnaz applied for loan to the government department and submitted quotation of S K Traders for starting her business. The accused stealthily replaced the quotation when she gave him the papers with that of D P Traders. When the loan was sanctioned, the complainant was given the cheque. The accused told her he will deposit the cheque in S K Traders’ account but he didn’t. Rather, he deposited it in D P Traders’ account and withdrew the amount.“The accused deposited the cheque in an account which was being operated by him. He neither gave the money nor material to the complainant. We are investigating the case and working to collect evidence against the accused,” police said.
