FOGWA slams SGCCI for ignoring weavers

Surat: Leaders of Federation of Gujarat Weavers’ Welfare Association (FOGWA) have again locked horns with Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) for not inviting them at a meeting to discuss new Gujarat textile policy with industries commissioner Mamta Verma on Monday.SGCCI office-bearers and trade representatives from the city were invited by the state government for their suggestions regarding the new Gujarat textile policy. Earlier, FOGWA had represented to the state government on the need to reduce power tariff and capital subsidy on the lines of Maharashtra.FOGWA president Ashok Jirawala told TOI, “FOGWA represents 35 weaving associations and 6.5 lakh power looms. Our representatives should have been included in the delegation that met the industries commissioner. However, the SGCCI avoided us and went there with the representatives from texturizing and knitting sectors. Surat’s power loom sector is the largest in the country. In the recent past, many units have shifted to neighbouring Navapur and Tarapur in Maharashtra due to reduced power tariff at Rs3.5 per unit and highest capital subsidy.”Leader of powerloom sector, Mayur Golwala said, “Earlier, SGCCI created confusion over credit lapse issue under input tax credit. Now, its leaders want to create more confusion with regard to Gujarat textile policy. We are experts in our sector and know what to demand from the state government to sustain the industry.”Sources said Federation of Indian Art Silk Weaving Industry (FIASWI) members were also not given representation in the SGCCI delegation which met Verma.SGCCI president Hetal Mehta told TOI, “We are the oldest and responsible organization working for the overall good of the industries in south Gujarat. During our meeting with the industries commissioner, we had discussed all the issues including power tariff, subsidy and exodus of power loom weavers to neighbouring Maharashtra.”
