One feared drowned in sea off Suvali beach

A local man jumped into the sea and brought Sejal and Sachin to the shore safely.

Surat: One person was feared drowned in the sea off Suvali beach in Surat district on Monday. Akash Shukla, 19, Sejal Shukla, 16, and Sachin Mishra, 24, who belonged to same family from Navagam Dindoli near here, started to drown when they went deep into the sea. A local man jumped into the sea and brought Sejal and Sachin to the shore safely. However, Akash was feared drowned by then. Sejal and Sachin were rushed to New Civil Hospital and later shifted to a private hospital. They are reportedly out of danger, police said.A five-member team of Fire Brigade began a search operation for Akash, but it could not locate him. “We had to abandon our search operation because of high tide in the sea. We will resume our search operation on Tuesday morning,” said Iswar Patel, fire officer of Surat Municipal Corporation.The month-long Suvali Beach Festival is going on at present. Around 6,000 people come on weekends to the festival being organized by tourism department of Gujarat Government. A 10-member police force at the festival is proving to be insufficient. Akash was 40th person to disappear in the sea off the beach from 2001 to 2018.Mahesh Patel, a local resident, said, “The authorities should make arrangements for life jackets, boats and lifeguards whenever they organize the beach festival here. Such an incident could have been avoided if there were lifeguards here.”
