Nuisance squads set up to deal with garbage issue in Surat

We can’t have door-to-door garbage collection system and also place garbage containers on roads. Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has set up three nuisance detection squads each in seven zones because of the problems arising from throwing of garbage on roads by people ever since garbage containers were removed some time ago.SMC officials will be removing the remaining 27 garbage containers on roads shortly. We don’t want our door-to-door collection vans returning half empty and garbage containers getting full. Earlier, there were 1,127 garbage containers on roads until last month. Garbage containers must be replaced by dustbins, especially in commercial areas.

Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has set up three nuisance detection squads each in seven zones because of the problems arising from throwing of garbage on roads by people ever since garbage containers were removed some time ago.SMC officials will be removing the remaining 27 garbage containers on roads shortly. Earlier, there were 1,127 garbage containers on roads until last month. It is mandatory to remove garbage containers under Swachh Bharat Mission.Municipal commissioner M Thennarasan has finalized area-wise coordination committees to be headed by respective zonal chiefs. Deputy health officers, zonal officers, assistant commissioners and personnel officers will be members of these teams.“The job of the teams will be to find out the reasons why the garbage was being thrown on roads and find a solution, identify the sources and convince people to stop this practice,” said Dr Ashish Naik, deputy commissioner of health, SMC.“Garbage containers were removed from the road to end duplication of the system. We can’t have door-to-door garbage collection system and also place garbage containers on roads. It is a requirement under Swachh Bharat Mission that there will be no duplication of work. Garbage containers must be replaced by dustbins, especially in commercial areas. We don’t want our door-to-door collection vans returning half empty and garbage containers getting full. People can call on a toll free number for disposal of their garden waste ,” a civic officer said.M Thennarasan said, “We need people’s support to make cleanliness mission successful in the city. We removed garbage containers because it is a mandatory requirement under Swachh Bharat Mission. Our door-to-door collection system has 100 per cent coverage. Today 90 per cent of the spots are clear of garbage. We will provide people with all the facilities, but we want segregated waste to be collected by our door-to-door vans.”
