Surat: A 41-year-old tractor dealer of Amreli was arrested by police for allegedly causing death of a 43-year-old woman in celebratory firing in Varachha area of the city on Thursday.The accused had surrendered at Varachha police station after registration of the offence. Police officials claimed only one round was fired by the accused from his pistol and that hit the victim. However, people of the area claimed that the accused had fired multiple rounds in the air and that these had been captured in CCTV footages.Police arrested Rajiv Khetani for firing in a marriage procession that killed Savitri Badgujar who was watching it from third floor of her house at around 12.30am on Tuesday. Police have seized the .32 bore licensed pistol of Khetani and requested Amreli police to cancel his arms licence.“The accused has been arrested and he will be produced in court on Friday. Investigation has revealed that the accused had fired one round in the air from his pistol and we have recovered the empty case,” said M P Patel, police inspector. Police have seized video recorders from the society too.The accused can be seen firing from the pistol a few times in the CCTV footages captured in the camera installed outside the society, said sources from the neighbouring locality. Questioned about the footages, Patel said, “The accused told police that he fired one round. We have no information if he had fired more bullets before the incident. However, I will inquire into it again.”Khetani had come to attend marriage function in the family of his relative Kanji Chovatiya, a resident of Lakshmi Nagar.The bullet had hit Badgujar on the left side of her face. It had pierced through the cheek and got stuck in head. She collapsed on the floor after the bullet hit her and was shifted to SMIMER where she was declared dead. The family initially claimed that she died due to some injury that she received while watching the marriage procession. However, a bullet was spotted in the head during X-ray.Police registered an offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and Arms Act against the accused on the basis of the postmortem report.
