Surat: Thousands of commuters travelling between railway station to Chowk Bazaar will be affected as Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has shut the road for vehicular traffic for 25 days from December 15 for laying of a drainage pipeline.Official sources said the road from railway station to Bhagal will remain shut for vehicular traffic from December 15 to January 9 due to laying of the drainage pipeline.The road from railway station to Chowk Bazaar known as Rajmarg remains busy 24x7. The laying of the drainage pipeline is likely to create traffic issues from Monday.SMC sources said commuters travelling towards railway station from Chowk Bazaar will have to take Ruvala Tekra route at Bhagal, while those going toward Chowk Bazaar will have to take Ring Road.City engineer Bharat Dalal told TOI, “We have closed the road from railway station to Bhagal for vehicular and pedestrian movement from Saturday. Those wanting to travel to Chowk Bazaar from railway station will have to take Ring Road. The entire road from station to Bhagal will be barricaded for vehicles.”According to Dalal, the laying of the drainage pipeline was pending since long. The drainage pipeline is very old and replacing it with new pipeline will ease problems faced by the residents in the walled city areas.Sudhir Desai, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), informed that the municipal authorities had informed them of the drainage pipeline work from railway station to Bhagal. Desai said, “To ease the congestion, police have deployed additional strength. Policemen will regulate parking and remove vehicles parked illegally to ensure smooth flow of vehicles.”
