19 yrs later murder accused nabbed from Odisha village

Surat: A man from Odisha, wanted in a 1999 murder case, was arrested from his native village by a team of Umra police on Sunday.The arrested accused Sudharshan Swai, 40, had allegedly killed Kaviraj Purna Jena after a prank over snatching Rs 10 note snowballed into a bitter fight in their native village Mathura in Ganjam district of Odisha.Jena’s body was found in the canal near Bharthana village on February 12, 1999. During investigation, police found that Jena was a resident of Pali village near Sachin on the outskirts of the city.Investigation revealed that Swai snatched Rs 10 from Jena merely as a prank. This led to heated arguments between them and Jena thrashed Swai. After few weeks, they came to city for work. Swai then planned to avenge the thrashing and planned to kill Jena. He took help of two persons named Hathi Kaliya Uday Jena and Durga Subhash Gaud. Swai had promised them Rs 10,000 to kill Jena.They slit throat of Jena using some sharp object in Pondachal locality of Khatodara area and dumped the body in a canal nearby . The body was swept away with water in canal and found almost seven km away near Bharthana village. While Swai and Hathi escaped from the city after the murder, Gaud committed suicide few years ago Hathi Kaliya is still absconding“Police teams are camping in different states to trace absconders wanted in various crimes. Our team traced Swai in his village and arrested him,” said D H Gor, police inspector, Umra.After escaping from city, Swai went to his native village and worked at different places. He was selling spices in the villages around his native, said police.
