City on track to complete 70 projects under Smart Cities Mission

Starting a model school and improving connectivity also feature as projects under Smart Cities Mission. Work is under progress in 31 projects worth Rs1,882 crore while 11 projects worth Rs443 crore await tender process to complete.The Union Government recently showed ranking of top five cities with regard to implementation of Smart Cities projects. Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will be among the few civic bodies in the country to complete the projects undertaken under Smart Cities Mission of the Union Government within the stipulated time. SMC that launched 70 projects worth Rs2,690 crore in June 2015 is expected to complete them in five years by June 2020.Deputy municipal commissioner CY Bhatt said, “We are on track and will complete all the projects within the stipulated time.”The civic body has already completed 28 projects worth Rs365 crore. SMC has already introduced Surat Money Card and completed Intelligent Transit Management System.SMC is first civic body in the country to set up two more tertiary water treatment plants under Smart Cities Mission.

Though Surat was ranked fifth, it can change because evaluation also takes into account fund utilization by the civic body.Municipal commissioner M Thennarasan said, “This is dynamic ranking system which keeps changing as it depends on the progress of the project. Once the final ranking comes at the end of the programme or by March 31, 2019, we will know where we stand.”Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana under which the city is building 3,094 houses for urban poor and middle class is one of the biggest projects under Smart Cities Mission. Work to set up an integrated traffic control system (ITCS) is in full swing and it is likely to be completed by December 2019. SMC has already introduced Surat Money Card and completed Intelligent Transit Management System.SMC is first civic body in the country to set up two more tertiary water treatment plants under Smart Cities Mission. Work is on to visually improve the look of 16 city roads. One lakh LED streetlights have been installed. The first phase of innovation and incubation centre has been completed. Starting a model school and improving connectivity also feature as projects under Smart Cities Mission.
