Surat: While the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has earmarked certain main roads for the paid on-street parking under the new parking policy, most of the important roads have been left out. The two-km stretch from Bahumali buildings to Makkai Pul is the classic example. This stretch houses many important government offices, family court, judges bungalows and apartments, commercial complex, banks and the headquarters of South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI). It seems that the urban planners forgot to include this stretch under on-street parking. However, the one-kilometre stretch from new court building to Jain Dehrasar in Athwalines has been earmarked for the on-street parking. This spot has a couple of banks, court and residential apartments.President of SGCCI, Hetal Mehta said, “We welcome the on-street parking implemented by the civic body, but they have missed out on the important roads in the city. The stretch from Bahumali buildings to SGCCI headquarter should find the place in the on-street parking, but it is not there.”Mehta added, “The vehicles parked on the road are towed by the traffic cranes and people have to pay hefty fine. We request the urban planners to include this road and other important roads in the city in the on-street parking.”Currently, about 16 routes have been identified under the on-street parking facility in various municipal zones of the city. One of the important aspect of this policy is to reduce congestion, traffic jam and reduction in pollution levels. On experimental basis, it was decided to take up two roads each from all seven zones, appoint nodal officer, traffic enforcement officer and team of marshalls in each zone and start implementation.Debashish Basak of SMC’s traffic cell said, “It is up to the respective municipal zones to suggest routes for on-street parking. We have chosen two routes from each zones in the first phase and the rest will be added in the second phase.”A realtor owing office at Lalbhai Contrator complex at Nanpura, Sagar Dandvate said, “The roads including Majura Gate, Sahara Darwaja and Nanpura should be included in the on-street parking scheme. People are ready to pay the charges for parking their vehicles. This will not only ease the traffic flow, but also create traffic sense among the residents.”
