GJEPC seeks Centres intervention over fall in diamond jewellery exports

Surat: The gems and jewellery export promotion council (GJEPC) has raised several issues with the representatives of ministry of commerce and industry and economic advisor regarding the sharp fall in the export of polished diamonds and jewellery from Surat.Sources said that economic advisor, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, Rupa Dutta, Economic Advisor and deputy secretary, Senthil Nathan had rushed to Surat to understand the issues faced by the diamond and jewellery exporters following the sharp fall in the diamond and jewellery export from the country.About 20 exporters who attended the meeting raised a number of issues and concerns at the forum related to air cargo in Surat, GST ICT Accumulation, GST on consignment re-import, jewellery section at Surat Hira Bourse, appraisal officer at Ahmedabad airport for studded jewellery, customs clearance facility in Rajkot, gold vault in Surat and Rajkot, AEO certificate and other related operational issues.Talking with TOI, GJEPC’s regional chairman, Dinesh Navadia said, “The trade members have submitted that the decrease in the export is due to the banks squeezing finance to the diamond industry, 0.25% import duty on the polished diamonds displayed in international exhibitions, non-availability of air cargo facilities in Surat etc.”
