Surat: Authorities of Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) are likely to take actions against its former in-charge registrar D P Vakharia, whose delay in getting required audit clearance cost the institute high. Vakharia had failed to provide the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) SVNIT’s audited accounts in time and thereby making the institute lose out from receiving complete grants for two consecutive years. Vakharia, who is also a professor in Mechanical Engineering Department, was in-charge registrar when the institute failed to submit audited accounts for two years. He had met with an accident and was on sick leave. In his absence, the institute had handed over charge to K D Yadav, an associate professor in Civil Engineering Department. The institute, therefore, had to spend money from its corpus funds to make some unavoidable expenditures. The amount was later replenished from the portion of grant the institute recently received. The institute’s authorities are now trying to ensure that the issue does not repeat in the third academic year too.“There weren’t any financial irregularities, but we are examining various aspects for the delay. I have already asked for explanation from the former in-charge of account department and the former in-charge registrar will also be asked to explain the reasons,” said S R Gandhi, director of SVNIT.The institute is also facing an inquiry by the human resource development ministry (MHRD) in the issue of financial lapses. During the inquiry, top officials of the institute were caught on the wrong foot when the former in-charge deputy registrar Patij Shah, who was looking after institute’s accounts department, too resigned from his post. The institute could not submit the papers demanded by MHRD due to Shah’s sudden departure without giving any specific reason for his leaving the post. A show cause notice has been issued to him earlier this week wherein he was asked to explain the delay in auditing the accounts and other issues. Shah is yet to submit his reply to the institute.
