Farmers’ body seek closure of cyanide factory at Olpaad

Surat: The Gujarat Khedut Samaj (GKS) has strongly demanded permanent closure of the Olpaad-based cyanide manufacturing company, Hindustan Chemicals Company Limited (HCCL) for illegally dumping of hazardous chemical waste in the interior village in Bharuch district and threatening the lives of people, animals and deterioration of the soil quality in the farm fields.A delegation of farmers led by GKS president, Jayesh Patel submitted a memorandum to district collector demanding the immediate closure of HCCL for violating the environment protection by illegally disposing hazardous chemical waste in three trucks at Vankhuta village in Umaala taluka in Bharuch.The Umaala police has registered an FIR against the truck drivers, traders, company owners and its officers involved in the illegal scam of disposing the hazardous chemical in the farm land and thereby cause a major harm to the health of the people and environment.In a letter addressed to chief minister Vijay Rupani, GKS leaders have demanded action against the company owners and officials under section 307 and 120B of IPC and strict action by the GPCB and Bharuch collector for violating the Environment Protection Act.President of GKS, Jayesh Patel said, “Following the NGT order, the environment clearance proceeding of HCCL was halted and that the state government had formed a special committee for initiating action plan.
