SURAT: Western Railway (WR) has given target to travelling ticket examiners (TTEs) for collecting daily penalty of Rs9,000 from ticketless travellers in trains. The target has been revised by WR authorities due to spike in ticketless travelling in trains running between Surat and Mumbai.Sources said the target given to the TTEs for collecting Rs9,000 fine amount by Western Railway is unrealistic. For those in local trains, the target has been fixed at Rs4,000 per day. Under such circumstances, the employees would flout the rules to meet the unrealistic target.A TTE said that the revised target was set recently and that those on duty in peak hours on mail or express trains have been given target of Rs9,000 per day to be collected from ticketless travellers. About 1,000 TTEs working in Mumbai division have collected Rs9 crore from Surat to Mumbai from ticketless travellers in various trains in the last fortnight.Railway officers, however, said the revision of target for the TTEs is a routine exercise.A staff representing the TTE association alleged that imposition of such a burden affects the morale of employees and wanted higher authorities to take corrective steps, failing which they will not be able to deliver 100%.
