The order, according to sources, was issued after Covid-19 death data and the number of people being cremated at the crematoriums under Covid-19 protocols did not match.

Following allegations that the the civic body is not giving accurate picture of the death toll from Covid-19, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Friday ordered municipal school teachers and its own employees to stay put at the crematoriums to count bodies that come in for last rites. However, it later withdrew the order too.

According to sources, SMC had assigned the task of counting the bodies and make a list of people who died of Covid-19 infection and those who had died from suspected Covid-19 symptoms. They were assigned to do the job in a six-hour shift at a particular crematorium.

The order, according to sources, was issued after Covid-19 death data and the number of people being cremated at the crematoriums under Covid-19 protocols did not match.

“There are over 593 teaching staff including teachers and principals who are already engaged in different Covid-19 related activities in the city. SMC has assigned teachers to visit micro-containment zones and to ensure that the Covid-19 guidelines are being followed. The teachers are being trained by vigilance officers. In Covid-19 management, teachers will report to civic body officials if they find anyone violating the guidelines in and around micro-containment zones and FIRs will be lodged against the violators,” said an SMC official
