As a first in the country class 11 and 12 to start in Surat civic schools

Surat Municipal Corporation-run schools will have higher secondary classes introduced for the first time in the country.

Surat Municipal Corporation-run schools will have higher secondary classes introduced as a first in the country. From today, 910  students of Gujarati, Marathi, and Hindi medium will be given admission to 14 classes in Arts and Commerce sections of Std 11 and 12.

The decision was taken by the SMC standing committee, claiming that it was for the first time in the country that Class 11 commerce and arts sections were being introduced by any corporation.

Of these 14 classes, 8 will run in Gujarati medium schools, four in Marathi and two in Hindi-medium schools. SMC will begin the admission process for classes of Std 11 and 12 today; 910 students will be admitted in 14 classes.

Full fee waiver to girls
Paresh Patel, chairman of Surat Municipal Corporation’s standing committee, told Mirror that girls have been given a complete fee- waiver in the new Class 11 and 12 sections. He further said that it was for the first time in India that Corporation-run schools had started sections for Classes 11 and 12; most schools offer education up to Class 10.

The 14 new classes will cost Rs 5 lakh per month and Rs 70 lakh per year. These expenses will be borne from the CSR funds of the Surat Smart City, Dream City, and other projects. A Rs 10-lakh cheque has also been given to the municipality from Lakshmipati Group, a sari manufacturing company in Surat.

At present 337 schools are run by SMC, in which 1,50,653 students are enrolled in 319 Nagar primary schools (Class 1 to 8) and 9,745 students in the 18 Suman (Class 9, 10) schools. “We have 1,60,398 students studying in SMC-run schools,” said Surat Municipal Commissioner Banchha Nidhi Pani.
