Accidental deaths drop in south Gujarat

SURAT: The districts of south Gujarat have witnessed a noticeable drop in the number of road accidents and fatalities during the past few months compared to the same period a year ago. Around 200 more drunk drivers were caught during this period compared to last year. "There is considerable improvement in figures relating to road accidents thanks to engineering design, law enforcement by police and education and awareness drive through social media by authorities. The drop in the number of fatalities is higher than the accidents. A total of 188 less number of people had died in road accidents in this period of the current year compared to last year.

SURAT: The districts of south Gujarat have witnessed a noticeable drop in the number of road accidents and fatalities during the past few months compared to the same period a year ago. Policemen in the region claim that the drop in the number of road accidents and deaths was due to strict implementation of prohibition law.The road accident data of Surat, Navsari, Tapi, Valsad and Dang shows that there were 138 less accidents in the seven months from September 2016 to March 2017 compared to the same period in 2015-16. The drop in the number of fatalities is higher than the accidents. A total of 188 less number of people had died in road accidents in this period of the current year compared to last year."Presence of police had seen an increase during the period specifically to control bootlegging activity and many drunk drivers were nabbed during strict checking. This has directly resulted in drop in the number of road accidents and fatalities," said Shamsher Singh , inspector general of police, Surat range.Surat city and district police started a drive against bootlegging after hooch tragedy in August-September 2016. Police started taking strict action against people caught drunk while returning from neighbouring Union territories. Around 200 more drunk drivers were caught during this period compared to last year."Police have set up 10 new checkpoints on roads for strict checking. Surprise checking on roads and awareness campaign about traffic rules too helped improve the scenario," added Singh.Signage and markers on roads and their regular repair by concerned authorities also contributed in improving the scenario, police informed."There is considerable improvement in figures relating to road accidents thanks to engineering design, law enforcement by police and education and awareness drive through social media by authorities. There is still scope for improvement if we provide additional space in carriageway to park vehicles during emergency and ensure there is proper lighting at the crossroads," said Krupesh Chauhan, head of urban planning section at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Technology.
