After 10 years, murder accused from UP arrested in Thane

THANE: A murder accused who had fled from Uttar Pradesh 10 years ago and was underground has been arrested by the Thane crime branch from Atkoneshwar Nagar in Kalwa and has been handed over to the UP police.The accused, Mohammad Arif aka Sharif Khan (50), who is a habitual offender, had fled his hometown and had set up base in Thane and Mumbai where he did odd jobs for a living.The police said that Khan was wanted by the Divyapur police station in Auriya district, UP, for his alleged involvement in a murder of a driver. He was also booked for several other offences, including dacoity, said senior inspector Nitin Thakre.The UP police learnt that he was hiding in Thane region and hence contacted his counterparts here and took the help of the crime branch, led by sub inspector D Sarak.Initially, after fleeing from UP in 2008, he came to Mumbra and was holed up here. Later, he went to Malvani in Malad and started working as a mechanic.The UP police received a tip-off that he was hiding in Kalwa area and accordingly a team of police officials was sent here.They laid a trap on Thursday and the crime branch sleuths arrested him.The police said that they have secured Khan’s transit remand and he will be taken back to UP for further trail.
