Thane civic body plans to invest Rs 60 lakh on school radio initiative

THANE: In an attempt to stimulate the language skills of students, boost their confidence and hone their creative abilities, the Thane Municipal Corporation is working on an initiative called school radio in collaboration with a private radio station. This activity will also facilitate community building which is what we are focusing on this year. As part of the happiness initiative, we are trying to reach out to as many people as possible so they have a platform to speak and this is one of the many projects that is on the cards. The officials are currently in the process of fleshing out the idea and will soon be tying up with private radio stations to train the teachers in recording, broadcasting, setting up of the equipment in the school premises etc.”It is said that a total of Rs 0.6 crores would be allocated for the project. Although still at a natal stage, the project aims to impart radio training, recording, listening and broadcasting sessions across all civic schools in the lake city.A part of the civic body’s fostering happiness initiative; the concept that has been adopted from the student radio association in the United Kingdom was announced by the TMC chief in the budget on Monday.As per the plan, radio programs curated by the students would be recorded and presented in their respective classrooms after which they would broadcast them on the TMC's E- radio channel provided by the private player.

More so, the best presenters would be chosen from every school and would be given a chance to record a special show on an FM radio station.From speaking on current topics to voicing their opinions on social issues, rather than merely becoming an extra-curricular activity in school, the platform will also be instrumental in contributing to the overall growth and development of the students.Sameer Unhale, the additional municipal commissioner said, “It is a unique, innovative project which will help students develop their personalities, creative abilities and vocabulary. This activity will also facilitate community building which is what we are focusing on this year.
