THANE: The work of re-decorating as many as 4,000 homes in the drab-looking slum settlement of Indira Nagar has been taken up by the civic administration, starting earlier this week. A part of the TMC’s slum beautification plan, three slum pockets in Thane are all set to undergo a major revamp in the coming weeks.The exteriors of the shanties of Dongripada in Ghodbundar Road, Indira Nagar in Wagle Estate and Parsik Nagar in Kalwa will be painted with bright colours in the first phase. Officials said not only would the walls be painted with a riot of colours, but the residents would get lessons in education, sanitation and hygiene which would be inscribed on the walls. While some welcomed the move, some feel that the civic bureaucracy has failed them in providing the basic amenitiess like water, sanitation facility etc.Nishikant Dusad, a slum dweller at Indira Nagar who has been residing there since the past 30 years said, “Painting of walls and the roofs is fine, but what about our basic necessities. If the house is colourful but lives are still black-and white, then what is the point of having a colourful roof over the head? We still get water for only one hour a day. That too the timing of water supply is not fixed so at least one person in the household has to be at home at all times or else we would not get water for the day. No one is helping us with that.”A civic official said, “We are in the process of conducting a survey and do our best to solve their problems.”
