When they were proceeding on the two-wheeler in heavy rains, the tanker knocked them down, killing her instantly. Thane: Intense investigation and street surveillance over two days led to the arrest of a 34-year-old truck driver, who had fled away from the spot after running over a 22-year-old woman, riding pillion, on Ghodbunder Road last week.On Saturday, the victim, Puja Jhende, was crushed by the unidentified vehicle while the driver escaped without helping her or stopping the vehicle. The Kasarwadavli police, however, pieced together inputs from an eye-witness and footage from the CCTV network and tracked Hiralal Yadav (34), a native of Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh , said police inspector Nasir Kulkarni.“An eye-witness told us about a heavy vehicle, resembling a tanker, with GJ number plate and a red strip at the rear, which had hit the scooter. A team led by assistant inspector Kailash Tokale worked back on the entire case and within less than two days, detected the case,” added Kulkarni. The police inspected numerous CCTV footages on the reverse direction for about 35km on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Road and finally gathered that there were only a few heavy tankers passing the Ghodbunder Road that day. They finally zeroed in on the specific tanker, which frequents the refinery and the destination at Nagotane at Raigadh and finally arrested the driver of the tanker, said the officer.Kulkarni said that usually in such accidents or hit-and-run cases, the myth is that the accused involved are seldom detected and the case remains undetected. In this case, Jhende had just passed her MCom exam and set out with her friend on a holiday.
