Downpour brings with it tree fall, wall collapse, waterlogging in city

The RDMC registered 46 disaster-related complaints, some of which included 10 tree falls, one tree branch fall, one nullah wall collapse and a compound wall fall across different parts of the city in the past 24 hours. We had sent out advisories through social media platforms asking people to take alternative routes if they are heading to Ahmedabad from Thane. Office-goers had a tough time reaching Thane railway station, which was inundated with water, leading to delay of train schedules. On Sunday as well it was raining heavily and there were even warnings by the weather department. Instead of taking the risk of going to work and then getting stuck again, I informed my office that I would be working from home.

THANE: Heavy rains continued to lash the lake city on Monday, turning certain pockets of Naupada, Vandana Society, Kalwa and Mumbra into swamps as the accumulated rainwater gushed into homes.The Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of Thane said the rainfall received in the past 33 hours from Sunday morning to Monday 6pm was the heaviest and has warned of heavy rains for the next 48 hours.The relentless monsoon resulted in a compound wall collapse crippling traffic, causing waterlogging at several parts of the city, tree fall incidents, affecting the daily routine of office-goers. Office-goers had a tough time reaching Thane railway station, which was inundated with water, leading to delay of train schedules. There were frequent cancellations of local train services. Fearing a flood-like situation some opted to work from home, while many decided to take the day off.“Last year, I was stuck in my office at Powai due to heavy rains. On Sunday as well it was raining heavily and there were even warnings by the weather department. Instead of taking the risk of going to work and then getting stuck again, I informed my office that I would be working from home. I even made sure that my laptop and phone were charged so my work does not get interrupted during a power cut,” said Pratik Kundu, a resident of Waghbil. A tree toppled at Lokmanya Nagar on a moving school bus on Monday afternoon but fortunately none of the students were hurt.Santosh Kadam, RDMC chief, said, “At around 6.30am, a 65-feet compound wall of Raunak Park at Pokhran Road 2 collapsed damaging two parked cars and a motorbike. We reached the spot with a fire engine and a rescue vehicle. At noon, a similar incident occurred at Kharegoan near ward no. 25. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in these incidents. After clearing the debris, we called the concerned engineers at the site to come up with preventive measures.”Although there was no major traffic congestion in the city, the traffic department had sent out advisories for people commuting to Ahmedabad from Thane.“As there was waterlogging on Ahmedabad highway, there was congestion till Kaju Pada on Ghodbunder Road for around three hours. We had sent out advisories through social media platforms asking people to take alternative routes if they are heading to Ahmedabad from Thane. Commuters were asked to take the Powai route to go to Mumbai or the Bhiwandi route via Kapurbawadi to head towards Ahmedabad,” said S Kardile, inspector, traffic department.In case of any emergency, one can contact RDMC control room on 1800 22 2108/ 022-25399828.
