The dam has around 102mcm of its total capacity of 339mcm stock. With heavy showers expected over the next one month and half, the dams will, in full possibility, get filled up, said an irrigation official.“Bhatsa dam is nearly 43% full, while Barvi is around 45% full. THANE: Heavy rains in the catchment areas of the two major reservoirs of Thane over the last one week have helped to add nearly 1,44,000 million litres of water, which is equal to the daily water requirement of Thane city for nearly nine months. The city requires around 485 mld water and the supply is drawn by several agencies primarily from Bhatsa and Barvi dams. The reservoirs will be able to reach the overflow mark soon if the good rains continue in the catchment areas,” said an engineer from the irrigation department, Thane circle.Meanwhile, Andra dam in Pune that also contributes to the supply in Ulhas river basin has recorded around 30% stock. Meanwhile, irrigation officials said that heavy rains in the catchment areas will also activate the springs around the reservoirs which will provide enough water to supply water to the weirs that will temporarily stop dependence on the dams.As per the irrigation department, nearly 144 mcm volume of water was collectively added in the Bhatsa and Barvi dams, thanks to the heavy rainfall recorded over the weekend in its catchment areas.Simply put, around 1,44,000 ml water has been stored that could easily suffice the requirements of the industrial and residential usage of Thane city for nearly 296 days or around nine months.

These reservoirs also supply water to other cities while Bhatsa water is also supplied to Mumbai.A study by the revenue department reveals that the highest amount of rains was recorded at Barvi reservoir’s catchment area (775mm), which helped increase the water levels from 70 mcm to 105 mcm in the last 10 days.Around 798 mm rains in the vast Bhatsa catchment area helped increase its stock by 109mcm from 293 mcm to a whopping 402 mcm, adding nearly three months of the lake city’s water supply. The volume of rains in the catchment area of the two major dams this year is less than the previous years but officials said it is not a cause for worry as the reservoirs are nearly half full. With heavy showers expected over the next one month and half, the dams will, in full possibility, get filled up, said an irrigation official.“Bhatsa dam is nearly 43% full, while Barvi is around 45% full.
