Thane: The solid waste management (SWM) department of the civic body has started the process of floating tenders for manual door-to-door waste collection from over 1.90 lakh tenements across 127 slum settlements in the city. The proposal, which was discussed in 2018-19 civic budget aims to ensure 100 per cent solid waste collection from slums that are not easily accessible by the current civic waste collection vehicles. Accordingly, civic officials have already started inviting agencies. A single agency will be given the responsibility of gathering waste accumulated in 300 tenements.A civic official said, “It is seen that these residents throw kitchen waste and non-biodegradable waste in the small storm water drains as well as nullahs around their homes, resulting in blockage. We then came up with this concept wherein we have identified 127 slum settlements some of which are in Gandhinagar, Shanti Nagar, Vartak/Shivai Nagar and Railadevi. The contract will be awarded for the next two years after which it can be renewed depending on the performance of the agency. The groups will carry two bins and a van.”The civic body will also develop a mobile application through which the appointed agencies will have to provide all the information of slum dwellers and send regular updates on the application along with pictures.“The agencies are required to upload pictures of the waste collection drive via a global positioning system (GPS) camera. The pictures would need to be uploaded on a daily basis on the mobile application along with complete details of slum dwellers, their address, mobile numbers, etc. If such information and pictures are not provided every day, a fine of Rs 200 will be levied on the agency responsible. Strict action would be taken against the agencies if such behaviour is seen occurring frequently,” added the official. The tendering process is likely to finish by July 16 after which the collection of waste will begin at 7am at the earliest.Agencies must upload pictures of waste collection drive via a GPS camera daily on the mobile application along with complete details of slum dwellers, their address, mobile numbers, etc. If such information and pictures are not provided every day, a fine of Rs 200 will be levied on the agency responsible
