THANE: City traffic will continue to move at a snail’s pace for another month as the repairs on Mumbra bypass will continue till August 15. The authorities should have planned it better as it is greatly affecting the city traffic,” lamented a Waghbil resident. In this span of 28 days no vehicles will be allowed to ply on this stretch, which means the work will be on till mid-August. Motorists heading towards Mumbai and Thane will continue to have a tough time. The work of the 3km bypass stretch had started on May 7 and was supposed to get over by June. When heavy vehicles break down it becomes a chaotic situation as they block the lanes and there are huge traffic snarls.

THANE: City traffic will continue to move at a snail’s pace for another month as the repairs on Mumbra bypass will continue till August 15. Motorists heading towards Mumbai and Thane will continue to have a tough time. The work of the 3km bypass stretch had started on May 7 and was supposed to get over by June. However it has been delayed by another two months due to the continuous rain, said the officials.“We have placed five slabs already and have to place the last one but are unable to do so because of the continuous rains. We are unable to lay the concrete layer; however, it will take 28 days for the curing process once the concrete is laid. In this span of 28 days no vehicles will be allowed to ply on this stretch, which means the work will be on till mid-August. Along with this work we are also doing other work on the stretch like, constricting a compound wall on the sharp turns of the road which will help vehicles from toppling down the mountain. We are even constructing dividers in places where there are missing pieces,” said Asha Jatkal, assistant engineer, from Panvel PWD.The traffic officials stated that people will have to face traffic congestion for another month and the work will not be completed before August 15.“The traffic flow has increased since June end as schools and colleges have reopened. When heavy vehicles break down it becomes a chaotic situation as they block the lanes and there are huge traffic snarls. There are times when multiple vehicles break down and people are stuck in the congestion for hours together,” said a traffic official. The commuters claimed that they have to deal with huge traffic congestion especially post mid-night as the snarls which start before the toll plaza go up to Nahur. The Mumbra Bypass repair work was started on May 7 as the maintenance work of the bridge was to be done as the ROB is in a dilapidate condition. So the diversions of the trucks which go to and fro JNPT-Ahmedabad area allowed to use the interior parts of the city not only post 11 pm but even during 12pm-4pm.“The authorities should speed up the road repair work as it is causing severe inconvenience to the city residents. I travel to CST daily from Thane and almost get stuck every alternate day. The authorities should have planned it better as it is greatly affecting the city traffic,” lamented a Waghbil resident.
