Four of five members nominated for co-opted posts are former corporators

The recommendations for coopted posts to the House are ideally expected for experts from various fields who can help the general body give a perspective on certain issues. However, after the mayor announced Shinde’s name, the NCP has demanded an explanation. However, the same is often taken as an opportunity to induct loyalists into the House. The nominations are done as per the strength of the parties in the House and accordingly, the Sena was entitled to make three nominations, while BJP and NCP-Congress had one seat each. However, as a case related to Salvi senior’s corporator status was pending before a court, it was expected that the name for the fifth member would be reserved.

THANE: Political parties once again paved a smooth backdoor entry for loyalists to the general body on Friday as four of the five members named for the co-opted posts are former corporators who lost out in the 2017 polls.Shiv Sena’s Dashrath Palande from Wagle Estate, former deputy mayor Rajendra Sapte from Kalwa and Jayesh Vaity, son of the party city president were chosen for the posts while BJP sent a representation in city president Sandep Lele while the name of Manoj Shinde from Congress was announced by Mayor Meenakshi Shinde, which eventually led to the NCP crying foul as it had nominated Manohar Salvi.It may be noted that the Congress in April 2017, had fielded routed corporator Shinde while ally NCP had forwarded names of Manohar Salvi and his son. However, as a case related to Salvi senior’s corporator status was pending before a court, it was expected that the name for the fifth member would be reserved.
