Thane: The one-of-its-kind ‘adolescent OPD’ recently started at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj hospital, Kalwa is a boon for teens and young adults struggling to deal with stress, anxiety and a host of other emotional issues. The OPD is a dedicated team of medical experts from various departments like from paediatric, gynaecology, psychology and medicine.Aimed at the overall well-being of the youths, the friendly initiative offers them the support and the strength to deal with mental health issues and guide them into making right choices in life.Flagged off in February the TMC-run hospital here, the medical help as well as counselling sessions are free-of-cost and the patient is expected to pay a minimal charge of Rs 10 at the time of registration, which is waived off if the patient is from a weak financial background.“It has been seen that the number of youth suffering from depression is increasing. The youth is stressed out when it comes to studies or taking personal decisions. So we decided to open this centre to help these adolescents combat these issues. Every Thursday doctors from various departments come together and talk to the youths regarding their personal problems with their families, regarding their love affairs, anything bothering them at school etc.,” said Dr Sandhya Khadse, dean at Kalwa hospital. The centre has not done any publicity yet and so far it’s been running successfully just by word of mouth. Over 100 boys and girls who have visited the centre stepped out with a clear mind after talking to the experts. The centre is open on every Thursday from 1pm to 3pm.The centre is run by a team of eight people from paediatric, gynaecology, psychology and medicines department who help the children and youth in the age group of nine to 21 years with various problems related to education, stress, parental issues etc.“Most of the youth or teenager who have come to us have discussed about their feeling of being restricted. They don’t like when their parents become over protective about them, due to which they become a rebel as they try to make their way of it. At such times we talk both to the parents and the children separately and explain them each other’s situation, we ask the patients also to give their children little space. Girls mainly come to learn about menstrual problems. Few even discuss about their love affairs and even queries regarding sexual intercourse. We even guide them as to how they could manage their stress instead of getting into drinking or drugs. According to the problem or topic of discussion the adolescent talks to that particular doctor which is why we have a team of doctors from various departments,” said Dr Jayesh Panot, paediatrician at the hospital.
