Thane motorists choose internal roads to beat traffic

In the last one month it has become nearly impossible to reach my destination on time taking the highway, so, I have discovered the internal roads. Some bikers shared with TOI that they are taking Nashik highway and then go towards Kharegaon internal roads to beat Kalwa junction traffic for moving towards Navi Mumbai using some narrow lanes in the thick locality. According to the traffic jam, I either take the Rabodi route towards station or go through the Mahagiri area towards station,” said Vishal Khapude. He added, such routes are possible only for bikes or small cars, however, at times even the heavy vehicles are let-in by the traffic cops. It is a bit longer and zig-zag, but way better than the choc-a-block highway,” says a motorist.

THANE: The signal-free internal roads and the narrow by-lanes in lake city are turning into busy thoroughfare as motorists snake through these roads to avoid the endless wait in traffic and the pothole-filled Eastern Express Highway and Ghodbunder Road. Most citizens here are exploring the alternate route and shunning the highways to avoid being caught in the long and harrowing traffic jams.“I live towards the end of Ghodbunder Road near Gaimukh and drive daily till the railway station. In the last one month it has become nearly impossible to reach my destination on time taking the highway, so, I have discovered the internal roads. There are various mobile applications aiding me to find alternate way out. The time taken is less whereas the fuel is mostly the same. Driving through these bylanes, with the help of navigation is really a relief,” said Asmith Kandhare, a financial consultant with a private company. He pointed out that the internal roads are definitely not in good shape, but atleast the frustration of inching ahead few meters per hour is avoided and you are not surrounded by giant-sized trucks and trailers. The commuters allege that the traffic department as well as the Thane Municipal Corporation are busy blaming each other whereas none of them are finding any solution to the core issue. The motorists say, alternate routes act as a safe passage and the alternate option.“I live at Wagbhil and drive down from Hiranandani Estate to Brahmand via Air force station road to Balkum and further from Saket towards my preferred destination. It is a bit longer and zig-zag, but way better than the choc-a-block highway,” says a motorist. According to the traffic jam, I either take the Rabodi route towards station or go through the Mahagiri area towards station,” said Vishal Khapude. He added, such routes are possible only for bikes or small cars, however, at times even the heavy vehicles are let-in by the traffic cops. Khapude pointed out that the traffic department should have taken initiative in providing motorists with some alternate routes, which would have saved a lot of time and energy of people who commute on a daily basis. On the other hand, a few motorists coming from Ghodbunder Road shared that those willing to go towards Eastern Express Highway to avoid congestion at Majiwada-Kapurbawdi junctions or at flyovers near Kopri, are taking the internal roads from Manpada towards Vasant Vihar, then towards Upvan road to Shivai Nagar roads either towards the Cadbury junction or to the Shastri Nagar, Savarkar Nagar and move out to Mulund from an old octroi post at Shrinagar area which lets out of Vaishali Nagar in Mulund or towards Modella Check Naka, informed Suhas Chaudhari, a resident of Manpada.Chaudhari warned that the condition of the internal roads is bad but as the traffic is cut short the frustration of snarls is much less. Some bikers shared with TOI that they are taking Nashik highway and then go towards Kharegaon internal roads to beat Kalwa junction traffic for moving towards Navi Mumbai using some narrow lanes in the thick locality.
