48 men held, let off on bail for gambling at Khopat ST stand

THANE: As many as 48 persons were arrested for indulging in gambling at a floor above the State Transport (ST) bus stand in Khopat on Sunday.Based on a tip off that the accused were indulging in gambling, the sleuths raided the premises at around 1.30am, said a police officer.The gambling activity was rampant at Vignaharta Samajeek Seva Mandal , first floor, where the alleged accused were playing the game using plastic coins, it was stated.The police added that among those arrested include two managers, 24 players and 22 service staff.Sources said that the raiding team also seized cash amounting to Rs 5.40 lakh and articles used for gambling Rs 5.21 lakh with the the total seizure totalling up to Rs 10.61 lakh.The game was popularly known as Shravan in the local parlance, it was stated.The police said that almost all of those on the game were from Gujarat , the police said.An offence under Sections 4, 5 and 7 of the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act has been registered against the accused with the Naupada police station, who are probing the crime.All the accused were produced before the holiday court, which released them on bail.The police added that there were high profile businessmen arrested in the crime but refused to divulge any more details.
