THANE: A paediatrician was beaten up by two men who are suspected to be a patient's relative outside his clinic late on Monday at Kasarvadavli. Dr Prashant Darandale , who runs a private clinic, had downed shutters and was walking towards his vehicle when the accused attacked him. He sustained serious injuries and collapsed."The accused assaulted him with a cricket bat and wooden stick. The doctor said that the men kept saying 'you hit children, you slap children' while assaulting him. They fled when passersby came to the doctor's rescue. We have noted the physical descriptions of the accused and are looking for them," said inspector Nasir Kulkarni from Kasarvadavli police station. Darandale was rushed to a hospital."He has suffered injuries to his back, legs, and right arm. He had to get stitches on his elbow and legs; he has also fractured his arm. He is stable and in the ICU," said Dr Ashish Phadnis , consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Jupiter Hospital.The police have booked the unidentified accused for voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons under the IPC. But medical practitioners said the accused should also be booked under The Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act, 2010. "The Act is for the safety of doctors and it should be enforced," said Dr Dinkar Desai, IMA Thane president.
