THANE: With a lot of stress being made on going eco-friendly this festive season, residents from the lake city have used bio-degradable materials to decorate their homes and adorn Ganesh idols. From cardboard and canvas to hay and cloth, residents have used material that will not pollute the enviroment and water. Some have also added a personal touch to the decorations by making them at home itself.Yogesh Pataskar, a Waghle Estate resident, had kept Lord Vitthal as the theme this year. So, all his decorations revolved around him. So, he read up a lot of books, watched documentaries and serials to know the various mythological stories revolving around the Vitthal. He then made around 10 paintings based on the mythological stories. He even carved a 5.6ft tall Vitthal idol.“I wanted people to know the story of Vitthal as many do not know much about him. I first enlightened myself by reading about him. I did a lot of research for over a month and then, with the help of a friend, made 10 paintings through which we depicted these tales. I also carved a statue of Vitthal using cement blocks,” Pataskar said.Another resident, too, put in a lot of effort to make her decor look palacial.“I didn’t want to make an ordinary palace. I wanted it to be a royal one. So, I used a cardboard box to make the outer structure of the palace and give it a 3D effect. I wanted to use glass pieces but then I was afraid of it falling on the idol and damaging it. So, I decided to paint murals on transparent sheets, also known as OHP sheets. The entire structure looks like as if it has been made using colourful glass pieces. I had to manage my college exams while making the decorations. So I used to make the paintings with the help of a friend by staying up till late night. We managed to finish it off in a week’s time. Also, I will not be discarding the decoration. I plan to give it to my friend who will use it next year for Ganpati,” said Prajakta Khose, a resident of Naupada.
