THANE: The Muslim community in the lake city will observe the 10th day of the Islamic month of Muharram by performing day-long fast, special prayers and mourning on Thursday.Referred to as Ashura, the day holds a special place in the hearts of the devotees as it marks a unique phase in Islamic history.The Shia Muslims believe that the day is to commemorate the battle of Karbala, which was fought in 680AD between the ruler Yazid and Prophet Mohammed’s grandson Imam Hussain.Rafiq Sheikh, a resident of Mumbra, said, “We believe that Imam Hussain lost his life in the battle while fighting for what he stood for. He was made to stay alive without a single drop of water. So we remember this day and also observe a fast in his honour. People also serve water to the poor or those in need during this occasion. Some even beat themselves on the chest to inflict the pain that the Prophet would have undergone at that time.”While Shia Muslims pay their tribute to Imam Hussain on the day, Sunni Muslims celebrate the day in honour of the escape of Prophet Moses from the hands of the Egyptian Pharaoh.A resident of Rabodi, Ali Khan, said, “There will be sermons by religious scholars in the mosque and special prayers followed by a small scale procession. We fast the entire day and then break it after sunset with a glass of milk and dry fruits. We often visit relatives and friends and sit in peace while reading the holy Quran.”
