THANE: The recent allegations of misappropriation of public money by the municipal administration has stirred the civil society that is now gearing up to question the netas about their silence over these alleged irregularities.Start from holding peace rallies, staging awareness skits to filing RTI queries and even presenting a appeal to deities installed at various Navratri pandals in the city, several alert residents are doing their bit to show the administration and the politicians that they are now alert to all the happenings in the municipal corporation corridors.With the crucial 2019 election year round the corner, the opposition parties has also started doing its bit to catch the ruling party in a spot.The corporation house was witness to a few alleged instances of misappropriation of the taxpayer's money recently in various projects inlcuding the theme parks, tree plantations and road repairs among others. Whiles netas managed to expose some violations, alert residents also did their part in uncovering some inadequacies of the administration recently.The residents have now put out a message, though in individual capacities, that they will not entertain further scams and intebd to sent across a strong message to the netas to buckle up.A motley group of activists assembled under the banner of the Thane Matadata Jagran Manch have planned a peaceful protest next week where they will symbolically pray to the goddess for the welfare of the society. “Considering that most of the ruling party members are devotees of the goddess, we will be appealing to the deity installed at few mandals in the city to instill a sense of well-being in the rulers and help stop this wastage of public money.”A group of residents from the Tikujiniwadi area has already written to the municipal commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal seeking an inquiry in the alleged road repair scam unearthed by them few weeks back. Another activist from the city has also sought information under the RTI about road repair expenses by the administration after written queries proved futile.Meanwhile, the opposition NCP and the BJP not to be seen siding with the alleged instances of misappropriation have also stepped up the heat on the ruling Shiv Sena for keeping mum over the alleged irregularities which were brought to to the notice of the House as well recently.The parties have openly questioned the Shiv Sena for allegedly aiding with the contractor who has been accused of fudging bills in a garden makeover project. “The Thane elected representatives from the Shiv Sena seem to be openly holding meeting and assigning other projects to an agency that is accused by its own Mayor. This shows that the party has scant regard for the residents and their hard earned money,” said BJP corporator Milind Patankar.Not to be left behind, corporator Najib Mulla from the NCP has also put the BJP and the Sena that are in power at the state in a spot raising questions over how the local civic administration was seemingly trampling on the rule book to execute a state announced tree plantation initiative in Thane.
