THANE: A BJP corporator has alerted the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) about possible sabotage attempts on pipelines supplying potable water to lakhs of Thane households after he found scrap materials, inlcuding old clothes and documents dumped in one of the arterial network lines at Ghodbunder Road on Saturday. The mischief was noticed after Manohar Dumbre, the corporator, representing Bramhand along with a few residents and officials checked the supply valves at Buddhavihar and Waman Nagar in Dongripada after residents complained of low water pressure. On inspection, they found several sarees, pillow covers and plastic waste stuck inside the pipelines. The team suspected some miscreants may have deliberately dropped the materials inside the tank at Dongripada, which could have settled in the valve units choking supply.“Residents were complaining that they were getting no water while TMC officials had been claiming of releasing adequate water. I went to inspect some valves to check if they had been clogged or accidently shut, but was shocked to see sarees and old clothes clogged in the lines. It seemed these materials were dumped somewhere in the overhead tanks,” he claimed. The corporator filmed the incidents and shared them online and also alerted the TMC, inlcuding the commissioner to take corrective steps at the earliest.“I have alerted the TMC commissioner to take serious cognisance of the incident. What if somebody plays mischief and puts the lives of lakhs of residents at risk someday? We have to deploy adequate security at these tanks immediately and also investigate the case on a priority basis,” added Dumbre. An official from the water supply department admitted the possibility of some miscreants accessing the storage tanks and dumping trash. He added that they have now taken corrective action. “We are sealing the tanks and lines so that no one can misuse them. We have deployment of staff at almost all reservoirs in the city. There is a plan to deploy cameras at several supply reservoir campus in the city, but it is yet to take shape,” said the official. We are sealing the tanks and lines so that no one can misuse them.
