Four highway robbers held in Mumbra for ambushing trucks

THANE: Four highway robbers have been arrested for beating up two truck drivers and trying to loot their goods carriers on the Mumbra bypass during the early hours of Sunday. The cops nabbed four robbers—Jafar Shiraz (22), Saud Shaikh (27), Mohammed Khan (27) and Aslam Sarraba—and seized their weapons. When he started screaming, the gang threatened him, saying they would kill him if he continued to shout, a police officer said. The police are investigating if the gang has a history of highway robbery and if it has more members.The police said Jafar and Aslam are history sheeters and were earlier arrested for similar crimes.

THANE: Four highway robbers have been arrested for beating up two truck drivers and trying to loot their goods carriers on the Mumbra bypass during the early hours of Sunday. A fifth robber is on the run.Ramprasad Pal, one of the drivers, told the police that his truck, with him and his assistant—the vehicle’s cleaner-—was headed for Indore on assignment from a transport company. Around 3am, while it was on the bypass, the gang of five, in an autorickshaw and following the truck, sped past it and halted in front, forcing the truck to stop. The five stepped out of the auto brandishing knives, swords and iron rods. Pulling out Pal, they hit him on the head with an iron rod.The gang snatched his mobile phone and Rs 4,000 he had on his person. When he started screaming, the gang threatened him, saying they would kill him if he continued to shout, a police officer said. Just as the five men got ready to flee, a police patrol team reached the spot. The cops nabbed four robbers—Jafar Shiraz (22), Saud Shaikh (27), Mohammed Khan (27) and Aslam Sarraba—and seized their weapons. The fifth, Chandu Bora (32), fled.At the Mumbra police station, the victim found that another driver, Manoj Yadav, had been attacked in a similar manner a few minutes before, and Rs 4,400 taken from him.The accused, all residents of Devripada, Mumbra, have been booked under sections 395 (dacoity), 397 (robbery or dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code , and relevant sections of the Arms Act (illegal possession of weapons). The victims were taken to Kalwa Hospital for treatment. The police are investigating if the gang has a history of highway robbery and if it has more members.The police said Jafar and Aslam are history sheeters and were earlier arrested for similar crimes.
