MUMBAI: The city woke up to a cooler morning on Friday as minimum temperatures dipped to 19.2 degrees Celsius. But the chill was shortlived as the maximum temperature soared by afternoon India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Santacruz observatory said the minimum temperature was 2.3 degrees below normal on Friday morning. IMD Colaba recorded a comparatively higher minimum temperature of 22 degrees, which was below normal by 1.3 degrees.Weathermen said the drop was seasonal, considering it was the transition period from post-monsoon to winter.Mulund resident Mithali Dhole said she felt the chill while on her morning walk. “It was cooler and pleasant. The breeze continued to be cool for a long time. Hope the temperature drops further,” she said.By afternoon, the temperature soared as Colaba’s maximum temperatures of 36.2 degrees was 2.7 degrees above normal, while at Santacruz, it was 36.1 degrees, which was 2.6 degrees above normal. For the past few days, the maximum temperature has hovered around 34-35 degrees.Bishwombhar, scientist from IMD, said the dip in temperature in the morning was due to the north-easterly wind, which is cold. “By afternoon, the setting in of sea breeze is delayed due to which the maximum temperature inches higher,” he said, adding that the temperature was expected to be in the same range over the weekend. The humidity recorded by IMD Colaba and Santacruz was 71% and 40% respectively.Meanwhile, Pune and Nashik were among the coldest stations (in the plains) in India on Friday, where the mercury dipped to 11.8 degrees. The coldest stations were Bhilwara in Rajasthan and Adilabad in Telangana, where night temperature dipped to 8.2 degrees. Pune and Nashik were over three degrees higher than them.
